A Vermilionville Wedding Filled with Songbirds, Rain, and So Much Dancing

Some love stories can only be explained by kismet. Melissa and Kurt’s Vermilionville wedding was one of those celebrations where every single detail traced back to their journey together, and honestly, it was one of the most personal weddings I’ve ever had the honor of photographing.

These two met in 2017 on a songbird banding crew in Yosemite National Park. Picture it: early mornings, vibrant birds, questionable camp meals, and the beginning of what they both insisted was a “totally platonic” friendship. Their friends and family knew better. It took a few more years, a spontaneous move to Kauai, and eventually a cross-country leap of faith before they finally admitted what everyone else could already see. Kurt proposed just outside Yosemite, right back where it all started.

Bringing Their Story to Life at Vermilionville in Lafayette

Can we talk about the details at this wedding? Melissa and Kurt wanted guests who had never experienced Louisiana to get a real taste of Cajun culture, and Vermilionville was the perfect match for that vision. But beyond the venue, they wove their love of birds into everything. I actually photographed all their details the day before at my house so I could give them the attention they deserved. Between adding their personal weathered birding book, the birds stitched onto her veil, and the vintage stamps representing the different places their families were from, these details were overflowing with intention. And that level of thoughtfulness was everywhere you looked.

Ceremony Details and Portraits Around Vermilionville

The rain played games with us all day, coming and going without much warning. We were still able to do their first look and all of their portraits at the spots they had picked out at earlier site visits! But most importantly, it also held out long enough for their outdoor ceremony. Root Floral Co. created arrangements that felt organic and natural, perfectly suited to the historic grounds. The meadows really anchored their chosen ceremony spot, and watching them exchange vows with the historic Acadian structures behind them, I was relieved that the rain didn’t ruin Melissa’s vision.

A Vermilionville Wedding Reception That Never Stopped

People traveled from seventeen different states to celebrate these two. Seventeen! After touching speeches from their parents, Melissa and Kurt played several rounds of “raise a glass”. It was so fun to see different pockets of the crowd cheer for all the different ways they were connected.

My favorite moment was watching what happened on that dance floor. Aaron Lane Entertainment kept the energy going all night, and according to Chris, this crowd ranked in his top five of his entire career. Melissa changed into a party dress for the second half of the reception, and these two took full advantage of having everyone they loved be in the same room. So the rain did in fact, move their paper stream exit under the porch, but it barely dampened the spirit of this rowdy crowd.
