Backdrop in Nature Portraits | Dreamy Family Session with Kerri
You know those creative ideas that just won’t leave you alone? For months, I’d been walking my dog through my backyard, and every single time I’d imagine these gorgeous backdrop in nature portraits. The vision was so overwhelming – canvas backdrops, paperbackdrops all set up between the trees, golden light filtering through – that I finally had to make it happen. So I called my friend Kerri from Threaux Events and basically begged her to bring her kids over so I could finally get this idea out of my system!
Using the same stunning Goldy Way backdrop we featured at Grace’s Lake Martin wedding, we transformed my backyard into an outdoor portrait studio. The whole concept behind these backdrop in nature portraits is bringing that studio polish outside – setting up a beautiful fabric backdrop in a natural setting and letting the outdoor light work its magic.
What made the session even better? Each of Kerri’s kids brought their favorite stuffed animal! And since Kerri is their mom (with her incredible eye for design), even the stuffies were aesthetically on point.
Creating Magic with Backdrop in Nature Portraits
The light that evening was absolutely perfect. After months of walking past these spots with SoCo, visualizing exactly how the backdrop would look against the trees, it felt SO good to finally bring this creative vision to life. Sometimes you just have to trust those persistent creative urges!
Since Kerri and I work together on weddings all the time, everyone was comfortable and playful. No stiff poses, no forced smiles – just authentic family joy. The contrast between the colorful backdrop and natural environment created exactly the juxtaposition I’d been imagining.
This session was such a satisfying creative exercise. When an idea has been living in your brain that long, finally executing it feels like such a treat!
